Religiously, prayer has been understood to be a personal matter and means by which we present our concerns and personal desires before God. This perspective of prayer has caused them to go unanswered, and for many, to come to the conclusion that prayer does not work.
Our effectiveness in prayer is not determined by how long, hard or passionately we pray, but in our understanding of the laws and principles that impact and govern the God's relationship with man and man's relationship God. Jesus, in His Model Prayer, shares with us the proper protocol, priority and perspective we are to have when praying. Having an understanding of the laws, principles and protocol concerning prayer will cause us to grow, not only in our confidence in prayer, but what we ultimately pray for.

Prayer, at its origin, is not a religious activity. It is not something we inherit when we are born again. The Bible teaches that effective prayer is something that must be learned. Prayer is not, as it is popularly taught, our simply holding a conversation with God. If this were the case, we all would experience more success in prayer and Jesus would not have had to teach His disciples how to pray (Luke 11:1). Before Jesus began to teach His disciples on the proper way to pray, He drew their attention to what was currently accepted as prayer, and noted that it was improper and ineffective in moving God. He then began to give them a blueprint for effective prayer. This blueprint recognized and addressed several laws and principles that govern this very important right and responsibility we have as ambassadors and citizens of God’s Kingdom. Jesus’ model prayer taught a specific order and contained essential elements that are necessary in order insure our prayers effectiveness. Jesus’ prayer paved the way for man to gain access to heaven and heaven to gain access to the earth.
