Lindy flipped on the back porch light and looked out the window into the darkness. A naked man stood there, his dark hair tumbled down to obscure his face. She threw the door open.
"Marin?"
It took a minute before he lifted his head to look at her. The light flooded down over him, illuminating his face. Blood trickled from a cut at the corner of his mouth and an ugly purple bruise swelled around one eye, forcing it halfway shut.
"My God, what happened?" she cried. In the harsh light, she could see that he was trembling.
He looked at her with an expression of utter despair on his battered face. "The clan has forced me out," he whispered, his voice creaking with anguish. "I have nowhere to go."
