A mixture of contemporary and dark fantasy.
12 strangers from different realities are kidnapped and left stranded on an Earth were magic has supplanted technology and ancient empires have prospered for centuries. Amongst them are a deadly assassin from the Canadian Armed Forces, a brilliant Irish trauma surgeon, a "nuclear winter" survivor and a medical marvel whose augmented strength and agility does little to compensate for his irreversible brain damage.
Receiving the aid of an ancient wizard of the Ethermen, the group of now 13 finds themselves battling fearsome creatures and witnessing marvels beyond their imaginations. But their journey becomes more rural us when a necromancer plans to use them in his overthrow of Earth...by plunging the entire planet into eternal night.
Their survival depends on trust...but will their past lives keep them from the one chance they have to find their way home?

Anton Zabolotni arrived at the edge of the clearing moments later. The lizard was waiting patiently a stadion behind. The assassin/Etherman was proud of himself: he was still stealthy, moving through the trees like a ghost. He looked towards the house. He counted only eleven... his master had said thirteen. Well, perhaps Yerret Tolk was inside (those outside were all too young to be him) and perhaps the tipster who had came to Thoth-Angrid had counted wrong. The flat open space between where Anton squatted and his target presented a problem... one about he had been warned. Still crouching, he reached into the Ether and stood up, invisible. Slowly, he approached the unsuspecting group, the dagger he had been given held loosely in one hand. It was soul blade, very deadly. Thrust into the old fool's body, anywhere, and his soul would be instantly transferred into Thoth-Angrid's tender care, to be tortured forever and ever. Anton was happy to be doing this...
When he was in range for what he had in mind, he stopped. He took one more look at the ten men and one woman, as they sat or stood there in the sunlight. They were not looking in his direction, they were pathetically oblivious. The woman was attractive...perhaps a soon-to-be companion? Anton had been considering a conquest more his age. Time for that later. He grabbed Ether and manipulated it.
His action made him visible again but it did not matter: all eleven dropped or flopped over as one. Anton wore a merry face as he strode forward. To the left he saw a figure running very fast towards him. Something glinted on the skin; sweat, probably. Anton flung death (human bodies with their fragile nervous systems, all that water!) at the runner and walked on, not even pausing to watch him fall.
A moment later, he noticed that the pounding footfalls, the harsh breathing, were still getting closer. He turned his head in time to catch a fist full in his smiling visage: the punch that tore his face, crumpled his skull, pulverized his brain and ended his life.
