“Technically, I’m not gay.” Then Martin glanced out the windshield. “But I suggest we continue this conversation elsewhere if you don’t want your mother to start wondering why we’re still parked in her driveway.”
For a moment, Drake had forgotten where he was or what he was supposed to be doing. Turning on the engine, he pulled out of the driveway, heading nowhere in particular.
“I like men and women,” Martin continued. “I prefer the former to the latter, but it’s not that important when it comes to sex.”
“Does Aline know of your…tastes?”
Martin sighed. “She knows I keep a busy life on the sidelines, though I never went into any details. I also told her I wasn’t faithful and that she couldn’t pretend something I couldn’t give, even if married.”
“And she accepted it?”
Martin shrugged. “Didn’t bother to find out. Unfortunately, my marriage was a mistake, though I realize it only now.”
“Well, you certainly don’t look like the marrying kind.” With an amused grin, Drake took in the handsome face and lithe body.
“Everybody told me so at the time, but I had lost hope to find the right person—“
“You mean that thing about the…special mate wasn’t just a show?”
“Of course not. I didn’t say it to impress you or anything. I really feel I have to meet someone, my soul mate I like to call it, who’ll understand me like no one ever has before.”
“And how would you have recognized him?”
Martin’s fixed stare compelled the pirate to look at him and what he read in the green depths took his breath away.
“One look between us and we’d have known who we were and what we meant to each other.”
Not wanting Martin to see him blush, Drake turned his gaze to the road.
“Or at least that’s how I always imagined it, ever since I started getting this fantasy.”
“But it never happened, right?”
A funny look crossed the devil’s handsome features. “Not until it was too late.” He breathed ruefully. Then shaking his head as if to clear it, he continued in a higher tone. “After years of waiting, I confess I lost faith. I began thinking I was deluding myself or maybe it was only a fantasy playing in my head and this depressed me even more. I turned to sex, booze, drugs…whatever could guarantee oblivion, but nothing really worked no matter how much I abused it. Sex, in particular, was a disappointment. The more I fucked with anyone—men, women, cats, dogs…whatever came my way—the more I felt the hole in my heart getting bigger and more painful. That’s when I met Aline.”
“You thought she could save you?”
Looking startled at his intuition, Martin’s eyes flashed. “In a way. She was sweet, especially since she didn’t ask for much and apparently accepted my swinging sexual choices.”
“I think she still does.”
“Oh yes, she probably does.” The Irish accent agreed softly. “But yesterday, I found out I was wrong about losing hope.”
A shiver pierced Drake’s heart, making his stomach cave in with longing. Undeniably, he had felt it, too, the painful hole digging its way to his very soul, the near certainty he would find the special someone and of course, the recognition. But it can’t be for a man! Then he suppressed further dwellings in an attempt to bring the conversation to safer issues. “Poor Aline! She’s not been very lucky as far as love goes.”
“Especially since she’s loved the wrong man from the start.”
“She told you about me?”
Martin nodded. “She told me she had a crush on you ever since she was a little girl, but you couldn’t have cared less except for that one time.”
“That doesn’t count. We were drunk, she much more than I and desperate, too, because she’d just lost her father.”
“Yeah, she told me, including the part where you vanished for ten or so years.” He smiled brightly. “I guess I’m luckier. You’re still here despite what happened last night.”
“If it weren’t Thanksgiving, I’d have disappeared faster than lightning.” And the pirate returned the grin. More seriously, he added. “I didn’t mean to run out on you like that. It was just too wonderful and too scary to remain there.”
“Glad to know you liked it, Pi…Drake. I was afraid I’d lost my touch.”
“Can you ever?” The pirate joked. “By your own admission, getting married hasn’t stopped any serious fooling around, most of which must be with men since you like them more.”
The devil’s lips curved in a naughty snarl. “I must admit, I’ve been a bad boy.”
“A devil, I’d say and since we’re on the subject, that Dale gave the impression of being more than your colleague.”
Martin was silent for a while, staring outside the window at the desolate view.
By the end of November, the lake became a sad and cold place, losing its brilliant summer colors, feeling almost as dark as his heart, Drake realized, following Martin’s gaze. True, grey skies mirrored in the murky waters below tinged the leafless trees and sparse vegetation with a foggy hue that did not look particularly exciting, though perfectly fitting the season.
Martin was the first to break the silence as if waking from a dream. “Maybe I shouldn’t say this, but I’ll level with you. I usually don’t approve of Dale’s attitude and last night was no exception.” He took a deep breath. “We had sex a few times, not many actually. I don’t particularly like him, but he was handy, especially right after my wedding. Somehow, he understood I had made a mistake even before I did and showed me his support. When I felt more in control, I pulled out on him so he turned to Aline. He insisted on meeting a friend of hers and didn’t quit until Aline introduced your sister to him.”
“Of course, Jenny knows nothing of this.”
“I don’t think he told her anything.”
Drake was silent for a moment, looking at the road. The place he used to love as a kid was only a few minutes away and he wondered whether to take Martin there or not. “He’s too aggressive for my tastes,” he confessed, turning the wheel to take the almost invisible path, half hidden by the pine trees.
“I’m afraid he felt how much I liked you.”
“You mean…he was jealous?”

What happens when a devil and a pirate are locked in a battle of wills? Well step right in and visit the world of To Seduce a Soulmate. I found this story absolutely fascinating. I found that this is one of the closest portrayals of a man trying to define himself using the terms of society. The love between these two men is rich, magnetic and something the reader will not soon forget. I recommend To Seduce A Soulmate because not only is it a spicy love story it is also moving for the emotional struggle.

[…] I found To Seduce a Soul Mate by Laura Tolomei to be really endearing and loved both characters so much that I didn’t want this story to ever end! Both Drake and Martin touched my heart and I kept rooting for their happy ending. When you want a story full of hot manlove, possessing a truly romantic plot (that might even make you cry in places), you want To Seduce a Soul Mate.
