Mountain lions were usually shy around people, but jaguars he wasn't sure about. He wrapped his fingers around the handle of the kettle and stepped backward in a crouch. When the other end of the handle came loose, the kettle banged against a rock. The jaguar raised its head, and it stared across the river. A low-throated growl froze Juan in place.
The river might discourage a mountain lion from crossing. But a jaguar could swim. It caught and ate caimans, the alligators that lived in the rivers of the jungle. And it ran down forest deer, delivering death with a single bite to the head. To kill with a single bite was what "jaguar" meant. His father had always told him not to run from a mountain lion, but to stand up and to look big. But Juan wasn't sure if the same held true for a jaguar.
The cat's front paws touched the water's edge. The sheen of dew darkened its black fur. Its broad nostrils flared, and its yellow eyes shone in the dim light. The jaguar growled, but Juan didn't dare look away. The fierce eyes forbade it. An image flashed inside his head. It was a young man huddled on the bank, a dented copper kettle by his foot. Stricken with fear, his dark eyes were dilated. It was him. He was seeing himself through the jaguar's eyes.
