This story takes place in a resort/retirement community in the foothills of the Ozarks. It is one component of a real project using the positive approach to build a hospital. By creating this story, the thoughts to create it become more powerful as they are written and sent to readers around the world on the Internet. The author’s intent is to demonstrate potential outcomes to situations through fiction, believing that “thoughts really do become things,” and “words are energy that move by intent.”

There’s always a skeptic in the mix. In this case, Oscar Randolph ranked high on the list of village skeptics. He opposed burn bans during seasonal droughts, attended town council meetings in order to protest every measure up for a vote, and carried a dark cloud overhead wherever he went. When he entered a room, one had a desire to mentally hunker down and prepare for the worst. And, of course, Oscar did attend the meeting looking as scruffy as always. His white hair was long and straggled, his face was full of whiskers and his clothes were always wrinkled, but clean. The room was crowded with residents who wanted to hear about the proposed hospital. Char had been invited as a representative of the Hospital Steering Committee.
“I protest! This is just a plan to raise our taxes.” Oscar’s vitriol spewed forth with such intensity that other residents who came to listen to the Char’s report shivered, hunched forward with their arms wrapped firmly against their bodies. Some even shut their eyes. The brave managed to squint enough to see Oscar’s ever-reddening face turn purple as he stood up and shouted, “This is the most irresponsible thing that has ever been proposed! The plan to build a hospital in the first place is based on a failed policy of your administration. Spend beyond our means, and then tax us up to the gullet. This is just wasteful thinking. Wasteful!” There was a hush in the town hall.
The crowd suddenly remembered to breathe, because they had held their breath when Oscar began his rant. And then they sighed. They knew Oscar had a small following in the village. Oscar’s “groupies” thought as he did and would do everything possible to disrupt a move to raise funds for anything and that included a hospital.
Char took a deep breath and mentally thought Peace be with you. She had learned that the phrase could work miracles in tense situations. She smiled serenely at Oscar. I can do this, she thought.
Suddenly Oscar sat down mumbling to himself, “This will never work…can’t be done… waste of time.”
