I have put together various thoughts, ideas, concepts, yes, and some opinions that have helped me on my pilgrimage. Some are my own, some are others whom I endeavor to give proper credit. There is an old hymn that says, “This world is not my home, I'm just a'passing through.”i It is a sentiment that we really don't believe, at least believe enough that we plan adequately for THE TRIP. Hopefully, as you read through the following thoughts and convictions, you will ponder the meaning of life, where it is headed, and hopefully find your way. I encourage you to wonder about the magnificence of God in your wanderings. Ponder, meditate, imagine what a trip we are on – especially knowing we are not in it alone!
The most important journey that a person takes will always lead to a fork in the road (that's usually just up ahead). If he or she is not well equipped with the proper stuff to decide which way to go, it could be an unfortunate choice if the wrong way is chosen. A pilgrim would be wise to check his baggage.
Excerpt
When a person begins a journey, especially one of many days, he is wise to plan well. He is also wise to carry with him those things that will make for an untroubled trip. The last thing one wants to be burdened with while traveling is loss of directions, not enough provisions, and certainly forgetting the purpose for the excursion in the first place!
Such is our pilgrimage from birth to death. We are on a journey – a migration from one local to another. We have plans, dreams, strategies. We scheme, organize, plot. We are clever souls – masterful to what we put our minds. We are so adept at figuring things out, that we many times fool ourselves into thinking that we really do “have it all figured out” when in fact what we have is a ride of our life! And the ride is more of a wearisome meandering that brings heartache and sorrow.
At best, our prolonged wanderings cause us to stop, ask directions, seek guidance, get on track so that the quest has purpose and the goal is meaningful. At worst, our fruitless drifting leaves us worn out, weary, depressed with those all important questions never being answered: “What am I here for?” “What is my purpose in life?” “Where is my life headed?” We are like Alfie: “What's it all about? Is it just for the moment we live.”
It is with these thoughts in mind that I put together some of my equipment that has helped my on my pilgrimage to another location. You see, it is my conviction that what has been written in a very old book by many different authors over many years holds the key to this life, and the life yet to come. If there is any truth at all in the pages of the Bible, then I best pay attention to the One who inspired the writers to tell His story. It is a story of how we were made, why we were made, what we were made for, and when we were to be remade like God wanted in the first place.
