Excerpt
I was out with my friend Melissa Kemper when the smell of her drink made me nauseous. I, who rarely turned down a free drink, could not stomach the smell of alcohol. Mel laughingly asked me if I was preggers. A few weeks later my husband and I found out indeed I was.
It is strange how my body’s reaction to alcohol kept me from endangering my fetus even though my brain did not register that I was pregnant yet. Cravings can be the little warning beacons in our brains ,the body’s way of telling us we need more or less of something. Early in pregnancy your cravings may be towards starches and sugars, as you progress meats and fishes become your focus. The body knows what some times the brain does not. Some cravings can even be a warning that something is wrong such as cravings for dirt, ashes or clay, called Pica. These indicate a deficiency that your doctor can treat with supplements. Keep a journal of your cravings and see if there is a pattern. If you have a constant craving for steak or red meats is it because you have a lack of iron in your diet? Not all cravings have a purpose, some are just hormones gone wild. Some people think that women may experience cravings for things like pickles and ice cream because they expect to experience them. While many pregnant women will never even begin to desire something as stereotypical as ice cream and pickles, many do have cravings during pregnancy. Some studies show that up to 68% of women will have a craving at some point during pregnancy. A recent study found that almost 40% of pregnant women list "something sweet" as their number one pregnancy food craving. Trailing at a close second, "salty food" was craved by 33% of women during pregnancy, with spicy food following at 17%, and sour or tart foods such as green apples and citrus coming in fourth as 10% of pregnant women's favorite snack.
This book is not written by doctors or specialists instead it is a collection of silly stories, recipes and, ideas from moms just like you. Before making any changes in diet please consult your doctor.
Nutritionist and doctors the world over will vary in advice and opinions. With my first child my doctor told me I could have a glass of wine to ease my back cramps. (I was under 21 so I never tried it.) Just ten years later with my second son my doctor told me even one drink can cause Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. Now four years more I am pregnant with my third child and not only can you not smoke or drink but everything is supposed to be organic? What will doctors think of that in ten years from now? The point is no one knows proof positive if a diet of hot wings and ho-ho’s, or organic lactose-gluten free food will produce the next Einstein. So with that in mind come with us on this silly fun for all ride of crazy cravings, gut busting stories, and outsider’s observations. It feels good to know you’re not alone in your food debauchery. We have done just as many acts against classic cooking and may even suggest a few you didn’t think of. We understand some recent trends in diet include raw foods and low carbohydrate gluten free products. We have included a few of these items but STRONGLY advise you to talk to your doctor before continuing any diet after conception.
