I snap awake. Damn phone. It's late.
I pick it up, cutting off its incessant wail.
"Who is this?"
Silence.
"Do you realize what time it is?"
Still no reply.
"I'm not playing games."
I slam the phone down, settling back into bed.
Brrrrrriiiiiinnnnngggg!
The noise irritates me. I pick up the receiver.
"Go away!"
I unplug the phone and go back to sleep. Blessed silence.
Brrrrrriiiiiinnnnngggg!
What the…? The phone's unplugged. Am I dreaming?
I pick it up. I hear breathing.
"I'll call the police."
Laughter, then . . .
"It's too late. I'm already in the house."
