Way back in August 4, 1977, a third of a century ago, under the Carter administration, the government established the Department of Energy. The intent behind it was reasonable, and all agreed that the DOE would solve one of the nation’s more pressing problems. The DOE presently has grown to over 16,000 full-time employees plus more than 90,000 contract employees, with a budget of more than 24 billion dollars per year.
We all remember why that particular department was started, don’t we?
That’s right; it was started for the purpose of decreasing our dependence on foreign oil.
