This chapter is an introduction to the main characters and the Zaeferi and Damanite people.As the story begins, the Damanites are planning their takeover of all eight planets in the Zaefer solar system with the use of a red gas, which will disable most of the population and kill the oldest and youngest members of Interran society.They plan to take the rest of the populace into slavery, but not before injecting all the pregnant women with a drug that changes the unborn children into Strigoi, a new species that exists only to feed an ever present hunger.
Renee, Elana and Lena’s mother, is injected with the drug, but because she was carrying twins, the drug was diluted and the effect was muted in both girls.Renee dies, Dyson (their father), is wounded by the Damanite leader, but before he dies he is transformed into a being of pure energy and disappears.
His shape reappears in time to prevent the Damanite leader from killing Lena who had been left to die.The infant Elana is taken captive by the Damanites.The survival of these twins is the one break in the prophecies alluded to throughout the book (which will be clarified in detail with a fifth book to the series) and it is this break that proves to be the ultimate downfall of the Damanites.
The chapter closes as the new Damanite leader ponders his future.

Tangor waited for his supreme ruler to return, but his wounds remained unattended. A couple of those wounds appeared to have been inflicted by the female Strigoi. He was thankful to be rid of the thing, and place it in the hands of its foster parent. He couldn’t say that Kundar was quite as grateful.
Many of the Keyrie had found women among the Interrans who were with child and had injected them, much the same way as had happened to Renee. The result was that many of them were dealing with hungry, angry Strigoi.
The newborn Strigoi would be highly skilled, murderous soldiers some day, but at this stage, the creatures were difficult to handle. Their immediate demands were for food, and lots of it. Initially, they fed on the flesh of their mothers, but that was not enough to sustain them for long. In their feeding frenzy several hungry Strigoi had amputated the wings and arms of their captors and a few were systematically feeding off dead Keyrie soldiers.
Tangor had no intention of joining the melee and instead remained in his ship. He grabbed a communicator and called the base ship. “Send down some whistlers, quick. Just drop one down in each village. I don’t care where. Just send them fast.”
There were two reasons for his actions. One to remove the immediate threat to his own
well-being, and second; his allegiance to Dia had always been calculated for his own personal gain. Dia was alone somewhere on the planet. His loss would be to Tangor’s benefit.
Tangor had no way of knowing that Dyson had already rectified that problem. If Dia survived, so be it. If not, Tangor had plans for advancement.
Whistlers were large, ugly, fat worms from the planet Damanon. They tasted fairly good, especially if you were desperately hungry, and were often seen crawling around on the planet’s surface. It wasn’t their coloration that made them ugly, but rather the slime that seemed to coat their surface and made them appear to glisten in light.
Juvenile whistlers were considered a food source, but older, mature whistlers were threats. The smaller, controllable worms were often used after combat to clean the battlefields as they ate the flesh of the fallen. The Damanites called them whistlers because they made a whistling sound as they moved along the surface of the land.
Within thirty minutes, the Strigoi were feasting on a giant, glistening, golden worm. Twenty of them in the village of Ian alone clung to chunks of one worm’s body and chomped on the flesh and fatty tissue inside.
Tangor didn’t bother to wait any longer for Dia. He knew that Dia would be able to commandeer another Keyrien ship if he had indeed survived. As General, he had leadership duties of his own that had previously been assigned by Dia.
The General set the ship aloft to see how the invasion was proceeding on the other nearby planets. He noticed several Keyrien ships following his lead.
Tangor left Interra far behind, wondering vaguely about the whereabouts of his ruler, but more worried about being consumed by one of the hungry Strigoi. They would need to find a way to corral the beasts and keep them interred until they reached full fighting maturity. Secretly, Tangor wondered if they even needed the Strigoi in the first place.
When Tangor’s ship finally escaped the atmosphere of Interra, he headed toward the small planet of Jupon and swooped low above the planet’s surface. The battle was still fierce there, but it appeared the Keyrie were winning. The results were the same on Sintron, although the Keyrie had nearly finished their work on the desert planet.
Tangor smiled to himself and suddenly winced, as the pain from his facial wounds was beginning to sting. The mission was a huge success. Within the next few hours, the entire Zaefer solar system will be under Damanite rule. The Damanites would enslave the children and anyone else they managed to capture. They would continue to grow the Strigoi they had birthed from the wombs of the Interran women until the Damanites held the largest and most ferocious fighting force in the universe.
Tangor let himself dream. Perhaps, if all went well, Dia would reward him with a planet of his own. He liked the name, “Supreme One”. Perhaps….
