Protagonist Margaret Lerner, a.k.a. Maggie, lives a humdrum life; that is until she meets Native American spiritual guide, Chickahominy Grits. Maggie, a divorced, middle aged woman with OCD, is entrenched in an unfulfilling job, an unfulfilling life. She's convinced herself this is as good as it gets. Then one day, out of the blue, she receives a mysterious and foreboding email from her spiritual guide encouraging her to take her journey, and on this journey, to pay attention to the signs along the way. She has no intention of heeding such crazy advice, but the more she learns about the guide, the more he reveals his extraordinary knowledge of her past. Soon other unexpected events begin to unfold, events she cannot ignore. These pull her backward, into her youth, where she discovers that nothing she had believed in was as it once seemed. Was anything in her past real, true? What does it all mean? Where will her journey take her?
Running parallel to her travels is the mystery of her father's possible involvement in the murder of two policemen in a church basement, in 1964. What she learns about her family and herself will change everything and her current mundane life will be turned upside down, changed forever.
Journeywoman is a timely tale of self-discovery and intrigue that pays homage to the romance of change.
Margaret Lerner, a longtime divorcee, lives a bland, uneventful life. She works as a secretary for her less than sane psychiatrist boss, Dr. Scottie Leonard. Maggie, on the verge of obsessive-compulsive breakdown herself, appears comfortable with her sheltered life and her never-ending need to count almost everything she comes in contact with. One day, out of the blue, the frumpy middle-aged woman receives an email stating that it's time for her to take her journey. The email is signed by none other than - Chickahominy Grits, a real honest to goodness Native American Indian who tells Maggie to "Pay Attention to the Signs." As she begins to discover more and more about the nature of her journey, learn how Maggie's safe little world becomes completely turned upside down.
Concurrently, as Maggie's journey begins to unfold, another story unravels, the tale of two murdered policemen found dead in a church basement, murders that occurred over forty years ago. And these two low life cops just so happened to have been murdered in the same church where Maggie's father worked. As clues to the murders begin to emerge, Maggie's father becomes the prime suspect. Learn how the never-ending love of a selfless father is tested, resulting in an amazing outcome of both loyalty and unexpected betrayal. As these two events collide, Maggie's mysterious journey and her father's involvement with the murders, her discoveries lead her to believe that nothing in her protected little world was or is, as it seems. And ultimately her view of both her past and present become altered forever.
Excerpt
Norman Vincent Peale, the champion of positive thinking, was once quoted as saying, "Christmas waves a magic wand over this world, and behold everything is softer and more beautiful." Not so in Durham, Connecticut, a small town located just twenty miles southeast of Hartford, the state's capital. In Durham a malevolent cloud hung low, shadowing the good citizens of the town. Murder was in the air this Christmas, murder that would inevitably change the lives of many who dwelled in this pocket-sized town. Not all lives would change, mind you. But for some, the change would be enough to turn their whole world upside down and knock it sideways. Especially after the truth got out about who was lying face down on a table in a church basement, deader than a doornail. For the friends and relatives of those poor slobs, and for the murderer too for that matter, life would never be the same again and that was for darned sure.
