The book is perhaps Pat's last joke. She was christened Martha Sophia, later found she was inexplicably registered in the US as Estelle. Her second husband called her Stella, while everyone else called her Pat. Somewhere up there I reckon a lively lady of uncertain identity is having the last laugh.
