Life is good, or so Eddie CloudRunner thinks at the beginning of the summer. He has a decent job, a well-functioning ranch, and a woman who loves him. His perspective changes when the dark specter of a dead relative begins dogging his every step. He experiences paranormal knowledge about the lives of several new arrivals in his community of Lamp Creek. Add to this the dismal reality of deadly environmental changes in the valley, and Eddie is compelled to venture into spiritual depths he had avoided for decades.
It starts when Pete Waldham contacts him and alleges that the Waldham family is suffering from an Indian curse brought on by Pete’s and two other men’s illegal hunting in Spirit Canyon. The occurrence happened twenty-eight years ago, and Eddie and his father were the only witnesses. Eddie has conveniently shoved this from his thoughts.
Then three offspring of the original hunters return to the community: Beth Hardemann courageously faces an unexplained illness; her half-brother Sean has dark problems only Beth realizes; Martin Bradley, a rough city kid, shows up to find his father. Jess Stanton also returns home, determined to solve the environmental question—especially after he becomes involved with Beth.
Eddie is reluctantly drawn to their concerns and forced to deal with real-world happenings while the surreal pervades his life. The Rocky Mountain weather takes on metaphysical qualities, and Eddie makes decisions that could affect the lives of everyone he cares about.
