The Pennsylvania delegation was seated in the rows directly in front of the Maryland delegation. There was no direct access to them without entering our area. Senator Barbara Mikulski couldn't get through the rail. Some gentlemen lifted her up over their heads and over the rail. She said that was the most fun she had in years!
On another occasion, West Virginia Governor Gaston Caperton walked up the steps, hoping to say hello to Maryland's Governor Schaeffer. I was seated directly in front of Governor Schaeffer and got up out of my seat and moved away so that the Governors could spend a few minutes together chatting. To reward me for moving, Governor Caperton kissed me on the cheek and said,"Thank you so much", then introduced himself to me. I felt the heat on my face and also many eyes. Even though embarrassed, I shrugged my shoulders and turned to the now staring crowd and said, "Hey, if you have it, you have it", but was thinking,"What is it with these governors?"
