PREFACE
Introduction to Author Charlotte Roach Chaffin
As long as I can remember, I have been fascinated by the unknown; the paranormal world. I guess it is because ever since I was a little girl, paranormal things have happened to me or around me.
The first thing I can remember is standing outside holding my arms open wide spinning around and dancing in the front yard. I felt a cool breeze and watched as a few dried leaves danced along with me. It all stopped when my sister came running around the house asking if I was going to come play in the pool. We spent a lot of time in the pool. It was the middle of summer and a good way to cool off. I ran off with her to swim, never stopping to wonder where the leaves and breeze had come from or why they stopped at that exact moment.
Before I knew it summer had slipped away. I don’t recall anything disturbing or spooky happening, until a night in September when I was awoken by the sound of crying. I got up to see if one of my sisters or little brother was crying. I checked the clock and noticed that it was close to midnight. All my siblings were sleeping soundly, but the faint sound of weeping continued. I had to find out who was crying; I crept from room to room listening. I found my mom sitting on the couch in the living room. She was drying her eyes trying to calm down. She had gone into the living room so she wouldn’t wake anyone up. “Was it a nightmare?” I asked. She shook her head no, just a sad dream. My mom told me about her dream and why it bothered her. In the dream she saw her father (my grandfather); who had been long dead. He was having a conversation with one of his sons. The son walked away with him. She said she was afraid for my uncle. Her fear was not misplaced; He died one week after her dream. Two years later the dream came sneaking up in the night making my mom cry. Once again she saw my grandfather and his son. This time they were joined by his daughter. My mom didn’t want to believe that anything was going to happen to her sister. I learned to believe. One week later her sister died.
Some of our family members smell flowers when it’s time for someone to die; others have reported hearing bells tolling loudly. I, myself have been spared knowing when death will visit someone I love.
However; I was not spared when it came to eerie, spooky and entirely scary happenings. I have seen things; you might call them apparitions, ghosts, spirits, specters or phantoms. Whatever you might think of them, they are out there and they are compelling me to tell their stories to you.
