The pond is a safe place for young duck brothers Sam and Louie. Their mother told them never to go into the woods past the pond. But Louie was tired of the boring pond. He wanted a more exciting life. One day, Louie convinced little brother Sam to go with him into the woods. Instead of excitement, they found danger. Louie led Sam away from the pond cheerfully. He sang a happy duck song as he wobbled across the flowing grass, with Sam right behind him. When they reached the trees that marked the edge of their home, Sam looked behind at the pond. No one saw them leave. That was good, he thought. There was no other duck to tell Mother that he and Louie had gone away. Yet something deep inside was tugging at Sam’s mind. He knew that it was wrong to disobey Mother. He understood that danger was in the forest. Instead of feeling happy, like Louie, Sam felt sad and nervous.
