Mike Carter hopes his last year at Prot U goes smoothly. But when the dictatorial chairman of the board launches a costly secret plan to improve the university’s image, the campus is afflicted with intrigue, deception and power struggles. As editor of the student newspaper, Mike faces choices that challenge his journalistic principles and jeopardize his relationship with protégé Jenny Lofton. Mike’s adviser, Prof. Angela Goodwin, is an idealist who wants to inspire students, champion truth and always do the right thing. But she’s also trying to get tenure, which requires kissing up to the “good ole boys” and keeping Mike in line.

       At Prot U we meet a bizarre mix of characters, including the mild-mannered university president who only wants to return to teaching biology; a conniving administrative assistant who’s a spy; illegal Mexican immigrants who work long hours for low pay on campus; a self-promoting English department chair and his overworked TA; as well as gays, Greeks, protesters and football players. Conflicts abound as the characters pursue their agendas over the course of a school year – always at the whim of the capricious Texas weather – to a chaotic climax on graduation day.
