Athelia gazed at the frothy sea from the deck of a massive sailing ship, Retribution. Her Taryn captors spat as they walked passed her and the other prisoners, all female, who sat in a circle around a post that jutted upward from the deck boards. Each detainee bore chains fastened to that post, and each suffered crimson scars around her wrist. They ranged in age from toddlers to elders, although most who fell too far on either side of Athelia's robust eighteen years had already died.
Both prisoners and captors appeared Taryn in heritage and both cherished the same traditions and culture. The only difference lay in a vial of immaculata, a substance that determines Taryn purity. The Holy One, supreme leader of the dominant Crom religion, decreed that all citizens must pass the purity test. Faithfuls carried out his orders without question, knowing that his mere nod of disapproval could result in damnation. They tested millions and found thousands like Athelia, whose blood betrayed signs of an Elf heritage.
