A rock skidded four feet from where Flex and Victor stood. Victor jumped back, and the rock disappeared over the edge of a ravine, somewhere in East Pennsylvania. The two young men were engulfed in a cloud of dust in the clearing. Trees and shrubs behind them were bending in the draft from powerful police helicopter propellers.
Arms outstretched, a smirk on his face, Flex turned in a slow crouch away from the ravine and faced his pursuers. He knew he was bloody, his gaunt frame coated with white dust, but he thought himself noble—unlike his preppy companion, who looked pitiful. Victor’s polo shirt had been torn off on one shoulder. He spun back and forth looking up and around. Flex chuckled. Victor looked like a flour‐dusted lunatic.
