In 1996, I bought a copy of Underground #3 at my first animal right group meeting. I was 18, and learning about the A.L.F. before I had attended my first protest. Perhaps sensing my interest in the publication, which I carried with me at all times and read zealously, one of the group’s founders took me aside later that month and asked my feelings about direct action.
He said he had an action planned, and needed help.
Having received no further details, I met up with him late one night at his house in Seattle. He handed me a pair of gloves and took me into the bathroom, where we spent the next two hours filling light bulbs with red paint. As per his instructions, I had
brought a backpack with disposable, dark clothing. As we filled paint bombs, he went over the plan: Walk the three miles to a large taxidermy warehouse in Seattle’s industrial neighborhood (we had no cars, and taking the bus, he explained, would present the risk of a bus driver remembering us, and giving our description to police). I would unleash a half-dozen paint bombs on the building’s front, while he spray painted animal liberation messages before we disappeared into the night.
