A short story collection with nine contemporary stories.

This collection of short stories presents a variety of characters and experiences, often with a measure of humor. In “Wild Horseback Ride” a young boy, who loves to play cowboys and Indians, gets closer to a horse than he wants to be. In “Promise,” a graduate student in English learns the full meaning of the word “promise.” In “T for Texas, T for Tyrone, Too,” a new teacher at a community college is mistaken for a former teacher, with laughable consequences.

In “Dr. Parsons’ Heart,” an assistant professor meets his worse nightmare, a full professor who is an equal opportunity bigot. In “Downsized,” a laid off man wonders if he will ever feel needed again. In “Alex’s Desk,’ a man finds a new job and an unusual office-mate.

In “Haroon, the Manager,” a man rises to his highest level of incompetence and is promoted to the position of manager. In “Networking” a soon to be laid off worker follows the common advice to network. In “The Zen Guitar Lesson,” a student gains knowledge both of the guitar and himself.

Excerpt

Bill Riley had been unemployed for four months now, but his wife, Laura, was confident he would be back at work soon. “I just have a feeling something will turn up any day,” Laura explained to their guests, old friends she had invited for cocktails. Bill just shook his head as the Carneys offered him a look of sympathy, then returned to the Brie, the guacamole dip, the plump green and black olives, the roulade of salmon. Laura insisted on continuing to shop at Eddie’s Market in Roland Park, ignoring Bill’s suggestion that they try the Giant supermarket.

Bill ate little and said nothing. He had not told Laura how he felt. He did not share his feelings with his friends. What was there to say? Things happened. One morning while shaving, he had noticed his sideburns were turning gray. One year, Laura had needed bifocals. Their daughter, Carol, had grown up, married, become part of another couple who dropped by for an evening. Their son, Bobby, had moved in with his girl friend at the start of his junior year of college and left Bill alone with his wife. Things happened.
