Excerpt
Wild and haunting, the wind whistled through the gaps in the window frames and down the chimney, making Nicholina slide further and further under the blankets of her bed. The wind sent shivers down her spine and every nerve in her body was taut. Fear took hold of her and her thoughts ran riot as they often did.
A window shattered, Nicholina tried to scream but could not; she was paralysed. She could feel the throb of her heart pulsate in her veins. A cold sweat clamoured over her body. She felt exhausted but fought sleep as long as she could; she was too terrified to drift off into a peaceful slumber. There was another smattering of glass and Nicholina felt herself falling, falling, and falling down a long, dark corridor which had a light at the bottom. In desperation she tried to shake herself back awake from the appalling nightmare, but on and on she fell until she hit the light, then nothing.
