The first squirrel to show up every morning was usually Alpha. Back when the squirrel-friends were establishing their eating at the balcony place routine, I had little knowledge of squirrel hierarchy and political infighting. I only named him well after realizing that he was large and in charge of the squirrel-dom in Miracle Mile. He was easily identifiable both by his girth and his behavior. Bigger than the others, Alpha had a long grand tail he liked to wave and circle around his body when he talked to his underlings. He was a brazen squirrel who always made sure he was first in line for a free handout. And if he wasn’t, he would chase off any and all of his competition.
