Kate meets Nick in the square of the Pantheon in Rome, when they share a table to avoid the rain.
He is travelling the world to convert people to fighting global warming by setting up greenhouse gas trading schemes, while she has been called in to helpfind out what is eating the carbon in the massive oil deposit in the Ghawar Field in Saudi Arabia.
Nick and Kate detect signals from obelisks in Rome, Paris, London, New York and Egypt.
They set out on an increasingly dangerous hunt to find the link between these seven obelisks and a new microbe that threatens the world’s oil supply, and discover thatsomeone is willing to kill to keep the link secret.

The whisper was barely audible above the sounds of Carnival music from St. Mark's Square.
"My duty demands my obedience."
The black tassels on the red peaked hat of the clown swung forward as the white masked figure examined the bare chest of the sleeper.
Two fingers lingered softly on a rib as the assassin bent forward and placed the tip of a long glass stiletto between them.
The right hand thrust down sharply, the stiletto slip-ping easily into the sleeper's chest. His body convulsed once.
One quick twist of the wrist snapped off the end of the stiletto.
At the bottom of the stairs a sudden burst of laughter from Carnival revelers on the boardwalk fronting the old palace startled the figure, causing it to slip quickly sideways into darker shadows, stumbling against a waist-high round object.
The haft of the stiletto dropped from the gloved hand and rolled beneath the object.
