Excerpt: The desolation all around her touched a nerve, and she hurried to turn the corner. A soft voice whispered in her mind ‘hurry Leah, it’s not safe here.’ Her heart began to race. Sweat formed in her arm pits. Now there was no more houses only open field. Walking faster her heel hit a patch of ice. Stumbling and tripping she fell. Fortunately, she’d fallen to her left landing on a grassy surface. Nausea played havoc with her stomach as it accompanied the thumping of her heart in her eardrums. Something felt wrong.

As a history buff I fell in love with this story! I felt I was walking with the Detrick and Leah as they lived through one of the world's most difficult points in history. Ms Kagan did a wonderful job in her reasearch and in bringing the past alive :)
A testament of love during the world's darkest time
Love. Betrayal. Families destroyed; hearts torn asunder and loyalties tested. This book follows the events of two families caught on opposing sides during the most tumultuous time in modern history.
I knew from the moment I started reading that this book would be difficult to read, simply because it deals with past events that are such a huge blot on our history. World War II Germany is a delicate topic to cover for any writer, but Ms. Kagan did a beautiful job.
All the elements of an epic tale are sprinkled throughout. Tragedy and triumph. Unending love and unfathomable hate. The ugliness of war and the tenderness of individuals.
For me, the triumph of love over evil, even in the face of unbelievable circumstances, made this a book I enjoyed reading.
