Chapter 1
Kira Spence puckered her rose-colored lips as she scanned the short line of shoes on the floor beside her bed. Her shoes were a pathetic display, dusty from lack of wear, all way older than she was. One pair was over forty years old, but was an interesting tall-heeled golden-strapped number dated back to the 1970's. Her older brother Jake had found the gaudy things in some abandoned warehouse in California five years prior, and for some reason thought she'd like them. Not that she didn't appreciate her estranged brother for doing something nice for her, but at the time, she'd expressed her utter disappointment in his choice of gifts. Now they'd become somewhat of a shrine in her room, a memory she would never wear but could never dream of parting with.
It wasn't that there was a shortage of shoes in the world. She was sure there were plenty left. But shoes were rare on military bases like this one where nobody would dare venture outside. So the women around her took pride in showing off their rare collections of fancy footwear and dresses by clomping around the civilian section, inadvertently rubbing her nose in the fact she couldn't be feminine all day every day.
Being the only service woman stationed here, she didn't have any choice but to wear her standard issued heavy black boots, navy blue cargo pants, and a light gray button-up shirt that fit too snug around her neck. Though fancy shoes and dresses were all material to her anyway, tonight was a special night, and she wished she had something nicer to wear.
She put on her only pair of blue jeans and her favorite dark blue tank top, the outfit she wore on those rare occasions she went out, which was fine with her. Wearing long pants covered the long unsightly scar on the calf of her right leg, the scar she had no recollection of getting. Jake had told her it had something to do with the car accident she was in on the day the virus made its way into the world; the time when hundreds of people died and yet came back as something else--monsters with an appetite for flesh. Jake also told her she was lucky she couldn't remember anything prior to six years ago, before the accident, and had left it at that.
Deciding on wearing her favorite flat black sandals that she loved to shuffle around her room in, she slipped them on her bare feet. She wiggled her petite toes sticking out the front of her shoes then inspected the small white tear on one of the leather bound straps draped over the top of her right foot. She cringed at the mere thought of them falling apart before the night was over, but these would have to do.
Kira gazed at her pale reflection in the narrow body length mirror on the wall. Her bangs had no curl tonight as they hung straight down catching in her eyelashes. She brushed the strands to the side so she could inspect the long thin brown curls that strung past her shoulders to her mid biceps.
