Fate, however, has a different plan for Tegrin. He encounters Kristina, a young woman whose parents were brutally murdered by the Couton. Headstrong and set on revenge for the murder of her parents, she runs a collision course with a man who will lead her to discover, she is more than meets the eye in both worlds.
Excerpt
Tegrin came to a place in the stream where it reached its widest and deepest. He laid Natiana in the grass beneath the trees. He stepped into the cold water, deeper and deeper until it was past his waist. Then he dove in.
The icy water numbed his body and his thoughts even more. He swam to the other side and back, letting the water rush over his body, willing it to wash away his tortured thoughts, before he headed back to shore.
Tegrin heard a noise at the water’s edge. The humans called it a cougar or mountain lion. It had found Natiana’s scent and came to investigate. There was another hunter’s scent also and it made the animal nervous. Another predator was here somewhere, maybe hiding, waiting to attack.
The cougar was hungry enough to take his chances. He edged closer to Natiana’s lifeless body. He heard a low, warning growl come from the banks of the stream. The hair on the big cat’s back stood up on end. He turned to face his adversary.
This animal was no coward and could bring down an elk or any number of large animals but when the cougar saw Tegrin coming towards it from the depths of the stream it felt fear.
The cougar crouched down as if to attack and thought better of it. It somehow knew this was a battle it would not win. He slinked away into the woods, never taking his eyes off of Tegrin. He would live to see another day.
Tegrin picked up Natiana from her grassy bed and resumed his journey to the caves, hoping the humans were there so he could be done with this place once and for all.

A smartly accomplished and compelling plot! Talent and imagination meet technique in the unlikeliest of places.... the "Fracture" between two worlds.
The characters are driven by McKevitt's own hand. Built by her obvious vivid imagination you will come to know them personally. They will pull you in to the story not chapter by chapter but paragraph by paragraph.
McKevitt's writing style is freshly surprising and flourishes with touches of realism that make the "Secret Enemy Saga" a double edged tale that lingers long after the last word is read.
McKevitt's thought processes are well formed and believable. Maybe too believable.
The ending left me wanting more ...... Thankfully, Book 2 is in the works!

I was surprised at how much I liked this book. The cover interested me but the story drew me in. The characters were well fleshed out and as McKevitt introduces each one you become to know them individually. The inner conflict of each character brings them to life and you find yourself wanting to know more.
Get what you need, close the door and get comfortable. Strap yourself in for the ride because you won't be able to put this one down
