“Rabbit holes” are, by my definition, those secret places to which we all go to escape the demands placed upon us by modern life. The name was borrowed from Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. It was when Alice fell down the rabbit hole that she began her grand adventure; it is my wish that you have the same experience with the stories in this book.
Excerpt
...“Babe, those shots I took yesterday didn’t work out. You’ve got a stupid look on your face and your hair looks like you were caught in a hurricane. Gonna’ have to shoot the whole thing over.”
“That’s okay”, she replies. “I need the extra money to make my rent.”
“No, you don’t understand honey – you’re making this one a freebie. It’s not my fault you looked like an idiot in all the shots”
“But I have to…”
“Do you want steady work or don’t you?” you interrupt.
“Uh huh.”
“Then shut up and pose.”
You do a preliminary line up of the shot, then toss the newly acquired focusing cloth over your head and the ground glass viewing screen of the Linhof. You rack out the bellows to bring the image into focus, then pull your head out from beneath the focusing cloth with a start. Looking at the viewing screen, you saw the image of your model – not as she is now, but possibly ten years older. She is dirty, dressed in discard clothing and is sleeping in an alleyway, between a dumpster and a cluster of garbage cans.
No longer looking at the scene through the viewfinder of the camera, all appears normal. You once again go under the darkness of the focusing cloth and look in the viewfinder and the scene returns to one of despair. She is now begging passers-by for spare change, her face streaked with tears.
You step away from the camera and look once more at the model, who is now staring at you in confusion. “Uh… I…I won’t need you any more today”, you stammer.
“But I said that I would…”
