I started and finished Embattled in a day. The book is a page-turner, full of passion. There's never any doubt about the will of the book to carry you on. Yes, places confused me, the nature of the transitions and transformations could bear clarification, but the story is clear. Not simple, however. We've all wished to own powers like Em's in the causes of justice and equality, but even in the beginning there arise hints that the cost will be reckoned and come high. Em struggles between her joy in transforming the world, and ethical issues, even while her own humanity frays. Her success endangers her identity.
Touches of the reality we all share, the reality that so often disappoints and dismays us, abound. I love the underlying thesis, that satisfying though instant authoritative intervention may be, human solutions demand involvement and time, and break the heart.
This novel is shaped by an author who lived in Mali, immersed in a part of the complex third-world, not a writer who simply snapped a few frames with her Canon at a tourist stop. The text could be tightened, some scenes slow the action and could be cropped, but if we're honest, when did you last read a book that had no such moments? This is Darlene Jones' first novel-- what will she do next?
High entertainment value yet provocative, original, and straight from Mencius' 'unbearing mind'. I'll be waiting for a good time frame in which to read the next book in this series by Darlene Jones, because if it's anything like this one, I'll be running my finger across the Kindle pad at a fast clip, lost in the world she created, with no desire to be interrupted until I once again reach 'The End'.

Em's life is taken over by supreme beings who use her to make Earth a better place to live. She is given super powers and thrives in her new role. But a love triangle inevitably causes its own brand of chaos. Embattled will have you turning pages as your emotions become entangled with those of the characters. This book is well written and entertaining. The author has a special talent for painting with words. She is skilled in the mechanics of writing, but there is nothing mechanical about the storytelling. A great read!
