It leads the reader through multiple generations of racial prejudice and vampire wars, following most closely the story of Yama and her descendants. Yama, her husband and daughter escaped a life of slavery in the 1800s southern U.S., only to flee to Italy and become caught in a new web – one where certain vampires brutally wreak vengeance on others due to interracial marriage prejudice. Yama’s grandchildren grow up to become entrenched in the struggle of justice and vengeance between two major Italian vampire clans.
