Zach closed his eyes at the sound of her anguish. Madigan’s anger he could take, but this raw pain was something else altogether. Hearing it nearly killed him. “I’m sorry, Madigan. I’m so sorry. Letting you walk away was the biggest mistake of my life. I should’ve come after you.”
“But you didn’t. You wanted our relationship to end.”
“I thought I wanted it to end. I didn’t know.” He rubbed his cheek against her hair, breathing in its sweet scent, reveling in its silky texture. “I needed time to think.”
“You had time to think. I went to the penthouse because I hadn’t heard from you in days. I was coming to make you see how much you needed me and I needed you.”
“I needed time to think,” he repeated.
“It seemed as if you’d already made up your mind,” she said sadly.
“Even if I wanted a permanent break-up with you, I never meant for us to end like that, Madigan. That entire night was a mistake.”
Madi lay in his arms, the fall of her tears still heating his skin. “I can’t end up like Lane Bradford,” she finally whispered. “In my own personal hell while you go from one woman to the next. You not caring enough about me to not only not have affairs but not even hide them from me. That would destroy me once and for all. You want the physical side of our relationship more than anything else. I want the physical and the emotional.”
Zach processed Madigan’s words, elated and afraid at once. His conclusion that she still loved him only grew stronger, but the more he pushed her to reconcile, the more she pulled away from him. He’d rushed her back into their sexual relationship. He’d forced her to endure his presence at the office. Then, he’d barged into her home, uninvited, as if he had every right.
She was fighting back the only way she knew how by inviting her lover for a visit and insisting Zach let her move on with the new man in her life.
