He came out of the shadows. Her breath hitched as the light caught his hard features. Was she crazy?
His size and the look on his face made her stomach clench. The man was dangerous. Taking a deep breath, she braced herself; felt the muscles in her legs and arms tense. “What?” she asked, looking up at him. The reality of the situation grabbed her in the gut. She might be able to take him by surprise and get away, but where would she go in a snow-laden countryside without a vehicle?
“You want to go? Let’s go.”
“You’re kidding.”
His mouth twitched again, but it didn’t make the knot in her gut disappear.
“It’s either that or hold it all night.” He didn’t wait for an answer. “I’ll carry you.”
She moved to go to the bathroom so fast she staggered, reached out for support. His arm encircled her waist, lifted, taking most of the weight off her ankle. Every spot his arm touched made her uneasy.
She didn’t like this. Not at all. At the door, she stopped, struggled away from those strong arms. “I can make it from here.”
“You sure? I don’t mind.”
“I’ll just bet,” she mumbled.
He frowned as he handed her a small flashlight.
She took it, slammed the door in his face and leaned against it. Was there a way out of here? Not with her car in the ditch and this stupid ankle.
She waved the light around the tiny room. It appeared to be a hasty addition to the one-room cabin. A bucket of brackish looking water sat beside the toilet. At least there was a toilet. The shower had cement walls with exposed pipes.
No window. And it was as cold as a meat locker.
