Excerpt

PREFACE

I was 46 years of age, a widow of seven years, and a veteran of a happy twenty-year marriage at the time I began writing this book.

Although I was told that it would take from five to seven years for me to feel truly healed from the wound inflicted upon my heart from my late husband’s unexpected death at the age of 41, I really did not believe it. After all, seven years sounded like a very long time!

I must admit, though, that the seven-year mark did make a difference. It isn’t that I grieved deeply the entire seven years, or that I even grieved in the same way and for the same things each year. It was simply, somehow, at that juncture, it just felt different. Perhaps there is something to the theory that states there is a natural release of energy every seven years, which encourages one to move forward and make changes. Moreover, listening to your inner self, rather than to friends and family, or to your outer self (which is what you project to the world), helps you to flow with these cycles and find change less fearful.

As this seventh year was upon me, I knew I had moved through my grief journey in a healthy and successful manner to reach a point of readiness to search for love once again. How confusing it was, yet, at the same time, how wonderful and exciting!

And, although I was relatively new to the dating game, I did have the experience of a successful twenty-five-year relationship history, so I knew what it took to forge a healthy and successful one. Of course, it had been a long time since my last date – 27 years, to be exact – and I just wasn’t sure how to find one again!
At first, I approached it as a science experiment as I examined the environment and specimens carefully. In truth, this was not my first foray into experimentation concerning human behavior, a subject which you will read about later on in “The Do-Over.”

Over time (and many dates!), I refined my attitude and techniques to become a happy and successful dater. In a short eleven months, I met the new love of my life, and we were married on the one-year anniversary of our first date.

In the following pages, I will share with you how I called upon the life lessons I previously learned and their application to my life after loss and dating adventures, as well as the new lessons I learned as I opened up my heart to life and love again.

I ask you to hold on to my hand for support and, through my story, allow me to shed light on how to find Love After Loss.

As a professional coach and mentor, I am passionate about assisting my clients to be their own best coach. I found "Love After Loss" to be written with this same premise in mind. Ellen uses her own triumphant story of finding love again, after the loss of her spouse of 20 years, to illustrate how to find and connect with a new partner. Combined with her professional perspective, she provides discerning advice, helpful suggestions, and practical tips on how to re-enter the dating world.
