Excerpt THE CREW WAS BORN on a scorcher of a summer afternoon between seventh and eighth grade. The day began with an early round of eighteen holes at the Knotty Oaks public golf course, followed by a little fishing from the golf course hazard ponds. After hot dogs at the 19th Hole, Rick, Drew, Beverly, and Fo hauled a bucket filled with pond water and pan sized sunfish to the large vacant lot across the street from Drew’s house and adjacent to the backyard of Officer Standish, the Knotty Oaks Chief of Police. The lot was dense with oaks and maples and grew wild with underbrush. This lot had been their quarter acre of neighborhood territory, their turf, throughout the years. There was a tall privacy fence between the lot and Standish’s backyard. Standish’s backyard was less of a yard than it was an above–ground swimming pool. Sitting Indian–style around their bucket and off to the side of a worn footpath hidden beneath a canopy of thick limbed oaks, the four boys chewed loose leaf tobacco and spit joo–joo on the ground. One by one, every two or three minutes, one of them would heave a fish through an opening in the branches and over the fence straight into Officer Standish’s swimming pool. The splash was always followed by laughter that should have been heard through open windows by Drew’s mother across the street...

Spectacular
I found this book to be addicting, being that I am still in my youth and experiencing teenage trends as they come and go. Even if your of an older age you'll still enjoy this book, hands down. Once I started reading the book I didn't stop until it was finished; I wish the book was longer though. Simply because you get attached to the characters and want to read more. I'll be purchasing the next book Pickering publishes; I recommend this book to anyone who is in search of a good read. I thoroughly enjoyed this book; and as I stated previously, anyone who wants a great short read should purchase this book.

"Stand By Me" meets "Trainspotting"
This novel tells the tales of four kids, who fall backwards into dealing drugs - leading to an incredible result. I grew up in the area alluded to in the novel, and I can tell you the representation of the facts are spot on. I know almost all the characters personally, but chances are - so do you from people you know. It's an easy read, that's not dumbed down. When you finish reading, you'll want to read it again - the sure sign of a truly great novel.

Return to Youth
Mr. Pickering has a knack for capturing any adventure that a youth may have trapped in our minds, but he is able to put it to paper, which is very hard to do! I highly recommend this read for anyone who is wanting to head back a few years or a few decades and relive some of the fun that we all had, while playing golf, going fishing or re-enacting scenes from 'Miami Vice'.

Once again, thank you Mr. Pickering for the wonderful story that you have been able to bring into my life, and let me relive some of my youth!
