Liz is married to a man she adores but like most busy couples with a young family their time together is limited and Liz longs for more. When Paul mentions that his old friend Bruno is visiting Rome, Liz sees the opportunity to spend some much-needed time together and suggests they go out to see him.
They've only just begun to explore Rome when disaster strikes and Liz is pitched into a nightmare. In the weeks that follow she discovers just what an elusive emotion real happiness is and is forced to take a long look at the life she's known and loved. If only we could have stayed in Portofino. For months after their holiday ended the thought buzzed constantly around Liz's head. But if they hadn't been en route to Rome they wouldn't have been in Portofino anyway, so staying wasn't really an option. She should have insisted on more leisure and less action. Why did she suggest they go to Rome in the first place? The list of thoughts was endless and futile and there was no future in 'if only.'
