Sheriff Thompson honked his horn to let Old Jake know that he had visitors. But the place looked deserted. He honked one more time before he got out of the vehicle. The old man was nowhere to be seen.
"Hey, Jake," he bellowed, as the men walked cautiously toward the shack. "Where are you hiding? You got visitors. Put the coffee on.
Suddenly a shot rang out as the men dived toward the ground. By the time they looked up, they were facing the barrel of a shotgun.
"What do you want?" the old man asked, keeping the gun trained on the sheriff.
"What's the matter with you, Old Man?" asked the sheriff. "It's me, Frank Thompson. I just came out to ask a favor of you."
Old Jake lowered his shotgun and squinted. He took off his glasses and cleaned them with his dirty old shirt.
"Sheriff?" He looked a little confused. "What are you doing way out in this neck of the woods? You're liable to get yourself killed."
Sheriff Thompson introduced Father Lawrence as they entered the old man's hut. Then he asked. "What's got you so spooked, Jake?"
"Whole damn place has gone crazy," Jake put the beat up old coffee pot on the antique pipe stove.
"How do you mean that the place has gone crazy?" asked the sheriff. "What sort of things have been going on around here?"
"I'd swear that the damn place is haunted," said the old man, as he took three stained cups from the homemade cabinet that hung half hazard above the table. The cups were chipped. And what ever pattern was ever on them was long since washed off.
"Seems like there's always someone or something prowling around out there. He nodded toward the door. He had a haunted look in his eyes.
"What sorts of things do these prowlers do?" asked the sheriff. He had a pretty good idea. But he wanted to hear Jake tell it.
Old Jake shook his head. His powder fine hair flew around his face. "It's just crazy, I tell you. Crazy things happening all hours of the day and night."
His green eyes grew wide. "But 'specially at night. There's such a racket out there, sometimes, that a man can't get a decent night's sleep; all that howlin' and screechin' and creatures flying around so low that they nearly take a man's head off. Why one minute, I can look out my door and see a wolf standing there. By the time I come back with my gun, there's a man standing in that very same spot. When I call to him, he just tromps off into the trees. It's just nuts," the old man said, shaking his head.
"Have you ever tried to track any of these creatures down?" asked Sheriff Thompson.
"I did," said Old Jake, his watery eyes staring off into space. "Especially the big birdlike creature. But, it's too blamed quick for me. Goofiest looking character I've ever seen, too. Looks like two or three different animals in one. I know my eyes don't see so good as they used to. But, there ain't no mistakin' that strange looking thing. It's big and ugly. That's all I can say about it. And its smells like it's half rotted. Can't stand being around when that thing is flyin' around."
