After escaping the brutal murders that hit the Coxcomb farm, Alana Coxomb is the only surviving member of her family. When she moves onto her family's old farm where her entire family was murdered over twenty years ago, strange and terrifying things begin to happen.
Excerpt
The vegetable peeler began to vibrate in Alana's hand. She squeezed the utensil tightly. Maybe it was just her nerves. Maybe she was just trembling a little.
She again scraped the carrot into the bowl of lettuce. She felt the vegetable peeler jerk in her hand. Without thinking, she dropped it into the bowl.
Stunned, she stared at the bowl for a few moments. That couldn't have been her imagination. She knew what she felt. It nearly jerked right out of her hand. She knew it did. It felt as though someone were trying to take the peeler out of her hand.
There was something in the room with her and she knew it, now. Was the thing trying to harm her in some way? Or was it simply playing its sick little games with her? She was beginning to get way to spooked for her own comfort.
Suddenly another cold draft of wind tore through the kitchen again blowing open the basement door. Now she was beginning to feel the terror that she figured that the thing in the room with her was trying to induce in her all this time.
Maybe someone was hiding in the basement. But how would it cause the wind to howl through the kitchen? No. Whatever was with her was supernatural. And in spite of the brave fight that she put up against the fear, she was terrified.
She slowly walked over to the basement door again and grabbed the knob. Finally, curiosity took over. She had to peek down the stairs and see if something was there. She took one step toward the yawning darknness of the doorway. Then slowly, she lifted her foot and took another wary step. She inched her way closer to the stairs and looked down into the darkness, fumbling for the light switch. It was so dark that she couldn't see a thing.
Suddenly, it felt as though an arctic hand planted itself directly in the middle of her back. She tried to brace herself. But it was too late. In one swift movement, the icy hand gave a mighty shove and she was tumbling down the steps.
Alana woke up freezing. The basement was pitch dark. She had no idea how long she had been laying on the cold, dead earth of the basement floor. But she knew she had been there for awhile.
An intense pain permeated the right side of her head. She reached up and felt her head. As she drew her hand away, she felt a warm sticky substance on her fingers.
