Amazing ending. Closes out book one well while hinting at what is to come.
5 star After reading book one I thought the ending was sort of weak. I know it is billed as a serial fantasy series, but.... Now I know why it ended like that. Book two finishes what book one started and still "gets us up" for book 3. Dragon Isle delivers.

Dragon Isle is well over 300 pages and has the great poetry at the beginning of each chapter that I liked from Book One - Through the Wildwood.

A Fitting Sucessor to
When you met Vanx Malic in the earlier book, "Through the Wildwood," you may have wondered about his past. We learned in the first book that Vanx was half-human and half-Zythian, but may have not been aware of what that had meant to his mother--who was Zythian, or to his human father.

"Dragon Isle (The Legend of Vanx Malic)" answers those questions and much more. M. R . Mathias has created a world with its own rules and landscape. When he takes readers into Vanx Malic's hometown, it's like walking beside the protagonist and hearing his thoughts.

Mathias balances the action between the quest for dragon's blood (which was foretold on the first book) with the intrigue and blood behind castle walls. He draws the excitement in both venues to a simultaneous cresting of action and resolution.

The author has, almost incidentally it seems, has also shown us a new, subterranean world with its own people and special protocols. I hope these gnome-like inhabitants of Vanx Malic's world come back again.

Again, Mathias has enhanced the reality of the world and societies he's created by beginning each chapter with a few lines of poetry or a song. Readers can almost imagine the music that a traveling bard in a tavern might play on a lute as he sings from the song, "Parydon Cobbles."

Again, M.R. Mathias has written a book that transports readers into a new world filled with the action and wonder that places him at the forefront of modern fantasy storytellers. Well done, Mr. Mathias.

High Adventure!
Vanx Malic continues his fateful journey to Dragon Isle where he must obtain the blood of a wyrm in order to save a woman's life. Vanx faces the hard choices that drive this journey for a people he owns nothing to, while hidden treachery threatens them all.

It's a fast paced adventure that you won't put down for long. The Volume 3 teaser at the end has me eager for more Vanx Malic.
