Ten-year-old José is in a dilemma. His older brother has a severe mental illness, and keeps acting strangely. On top of that, José's best friend keeps teasing him about his brother's serious condition. When they come across an animal in grave danger, José and Sebastian don't know what to do! Will José's brother save the day?
Excerpt
When José sat on the couch, his dad gently pulled out a picture book from off the shelf in the family room. He started reading it to José. José smiled. The book was about being a good friend—it was one that he really liked.
Then, Alejandro came out of his bedroom and walked down the hallway. He was laughing to himself, although not very loudly.
"What's on your mind?" José’s dad interrupted their reading. "Why are you laughing?"
Alejandro had laughed and smiled to himself many times before, although he never told anyone why he did so. He was very ill, and was seeing things and hearing voices in his mind, and sometimes he thought the voices and visions were funny. Alejandro was too ill to know that he saw and heard things because of his paranoid schizophrenia.
