I LOVED This Book!
Until a few years ago I had never spent any time around horses - so never understood the mystique. But then I got a magazine assignment to write an article about a dude ranch in Idaho. While there, I had the opportunity to take lessons and write twice a day for a week. On the last day there, I was so in love with my horse (Two Dots) that I felt incredibly sad to turn him loose into the corral and say goodbye. I know, that sounds dopey - but it's true. It was at that moment that I truly understood the connection between man/woman and horse. When I saw this book I grabbed it up and am now sitting at my desk flipping through the amazing images that people have created over the centuries depicting horses.
Of all of the images, my favorite were of the prehistoric cave drawings of Lascaux, France. The drawings are so beautiful - and amazing that they've survived time. I think the reasons I find them so appealing is that they show us modern folks the connection - even then - between people and horses. Just breathtaking.
Most surprising to me were some of the images I hadn't seen before - particularly those of Paul Gauguin. It never occurred to me that I'd see him painting horses on the beach. Another first for me were the paintings of Franz Marc (loved Blue Horse).

Horses in Art Through the Eyes of an Appreciator
As an artist, an art historian and teacher of art who is published in both art history and art instruction, from the author's description, I expected to find a book on the art historical aspects of horses in drawings and paintings reflecting their practical roles throughout history - in other words, horses in art as a reflection of their times. But what greeted me was exactly what the title described "A Pictorial Adventure in Historical Art..." This is, indeed, a delightful collection of individual pictures by famous artists that personally appealed to the author for various reasons. It is as much a unique look at the collector as it is the art. Highly enjoyable and well worth the time and the investment. ~ Julia Busch
