The story of the Horse in Film.

Lights! Camera! Gallop! tells the story of the horse in film and television, from simple means of transport through character parts to glamorous film star, from the silent films through swashbucklers and Westerns to present day films. Aimed at all who appreciate the beauty of horses or have an interest in films, this book includes celebrity-style briefings on the horses in star roles in film and TV - including their make-up secrets. All the main genres of film featuring horses are covered: Westerns (great for exciting chase sequences), ‘wild horse’ movies (survival against enormous odds), action films (even horses versus Nazis!) and comedies (a talking horse, a horse on a piano…). Find out how some of the most awe-inspiring scenes with horses were filmed - and how to spot some of the tricks of the trade. Key cinematic techniques are explained, from clever editing, through Stop Animation to Computer Generated Images, all in readily understandable terms. Check out the pictures of beautiful horses - the well-toned bodies, the manes to die for, of horses such as Black Beauty, Shadowfax from Lord of the Rings or Roy Rogers’ Trigger - and amazing stunts. This book also tells you how to look up horse stars on the internet and where to watch key horse scenes from famous films on the internet – for free. At the end, you can test your knowledge with a fun film trivia quiz.

Excerpt

By modern standards, the tricks used in filming Mister Ed are almost ludicrously basic. Mostly, the horse is quite static, except that when he is ‘talking,’ his upper lip moves quite flexibly as if in speech. This effect would have been created by editing the film so that the timing of the lip movements roughly corresponded to the timing of a voice-over: an actor reading Mister Ed’s lines. A widespread rumour at the time – not denied by the studio – was that peanut butter was smeared on the horse’s gums and that his mouth-twitching resulted from his attempts to remove it. Other theories have suggested that a clear nylon thread was used, either physically to lift his lips or in the form of a knot, invisible to the camera, placed between his upper front teeth to cause irritation and therefore lip-twitching.

Saddle up!
“Saddle up for a great read!”
Julie Cordiner, Amazon

Not just for horse fanatics
I bought this ebook recently as it was new out expecting it to be another girls book for horse fanatics but was pleasantly surprised by the real in depth content that covers all different genres and decades which is well complimented by beautiful images of varying horses including comedy and stunt roles. I would recommend this to all ages and genders as a good light read which both I and my husband thoroughly enjoyed although would have liked it to be a little longer.
