As time passes, the revelation of prophetic dreams causes him to suspect he has prevented one war, only to bring about another. Clayden must seek to find a way to avoid such a thing. But will his actions stop the war, or cause it?
Excerpt
Only two candles were lit within the temple, and both of these beside the statue of Basale. A lone figure knelt before the alter, head bowed. Daemon knew who it was instantly, though her hair was loose and flowing rather than in its customary braid.
Valeria lifted her head as he approached. “Your Majesty.” She rose to her feet with a fluid grace, hands hidden in the folds of her blue dress.
The candlelight reflected in her dark eyes, lighting a kind of golden glow there, and Daemon was struck anew by her beauty. The tension, the tight knot of fear, the aching loneliness all melted away as he gazed into those eyes.
“Is everything all right?” he asked, thinking now only of her.
“I have no troubles, Your Majesty.” She avoided his gaze, a slight flush in her cheeks.
How he longed to hear her sweet voice speak his name, a thought he quickly buried. “Something must have brought you to the temple so late. If not trouble, then what?” A sudden vision of her slipping off to meet some secret lover flashed through his mind bringing with it a surprising stab of pain.
She ventured an uncertain look at him, the tilt of her head making her seem at once childlike and intensely feminine. Daemon’s heart skipped a beat and silently he prayed that if there were gods, anywhere, and if they thought anything of him at all, they would not now allow Valeria to speak to him of some other man that held her heart.
