Charlie’s eyes snapped open. With a sweeping glance, he took in the gray uniforms, the guns. Then the dragon was springing forward. Charlie shoved the table hard, slamming it into the two nearest soldiers and knocking them off their feet. Then he grabbed his chair and broke it across the side of a third soldier’s head. The man stumbled back, stunned, blood flowing freely down his cheek.
Everything grew very sharp and Charlie was aware of Thomas nearby, struggling with another soldier for his gun; of Peter cringing beneath a nearby table; of the patrons of the bakery fleeing; of a gunshot, even as he drop-kicked a soldier in the chest hard enough to crack bone. Charlie came down in a crouch, sweeping out his right leg to shatter yet another soldier’s ankle. The man went down with a howl.
All of this happened in the time it took to draw a breath. Then everything was still. Only Charlie and Thomas remained standing. Charlie was breathing hard as he fought to bring the dragon back under control; Thomas was clutching an assault rifle and staring at the soldier at his feet. The man had a gaping hole in the middle of his chest.
