I am so proud to say that I got the oppurtunity to read this book. As I can relate to parts of it. The author told the story beautifully. I am going to recommend this book to my family and friends and I hope everyone that reads it does the same. Very well written.

Marylou Depeiza writes a beautiful memoir of her pragmatic, tough-love and courageous African American mother, raising her and her 5 siblings as a single parent in a hostile inner city environment and teaching her the importance of family unity and pride while maintaining a strong sense of humor in the face of adversity. The book is part mystery, as Marylou tells of her arduous search for the identity of her father, of whom her mother never speaks. A great read!

Walking in her shoes is a non fiction suspense novel at its best. This true story happens in Boston, Massachusetts in the 20th century. The author, Marylou Depeiza, grew up in the 1950s and 1960s when children were seen and not heard. She asks her mother Leola Williams about her life and Marylou is told to not get into grown folks business. Leola passes away in the mid 1990s. Upon her death, Marylou uses the Internet to do genealogical research to find out about her mother's past. She learns about the China-Burma-India Theatre of WW 2. In the end, Marylou learns about walking in her mother's shoes.
She never felt safe at home as a young girl, and didn't understand why when she finally escaped she wasn't safe in the big wide world either ...effectively jumping out of the frying pan into the fire!
Rosetta was born in 1909 as the youngest of ten children. The family had more laughter than money and neighbors would knock on their door to ask, "Can we come in and laugh, too?"
