Two brides live simultaneously in Elizabethan manor Tyneham House - four centuries apart! They even share a name, but can Katharine help Catherine deal with the events that lie ahead so threateningly?

Two brides live side by side in Tyneham House, each in her own century. Katharine, married to Arthur in 1543, is freer to move through time than Catherine, who in 1943 is married to Jeremy.

So she can see, as if they had already been, events that for Catherine are yet to be. She warns of troubles ahead and her warning helps to prepare Catherine for a happening that will crucially change her life, along with the lives of all around her.

Excerpt

Somewhere I’ll find her – somewhere, somewhen.

I know that she is here, in this vicinity, because back in my youth she said she would be and from the beginning I could trust Katharine.

It is springtime. I have always returned in the spring, in my mind. Now, though, I am back in reality.
Blueness surrounds me – a whole sea of bluebells. We knew them as granfer greygles and they coloured our springs just as they are colouring this one.

Amidst the blue, and the rampaging greens of weeds and ivy, what is this I see? A clump of poetaz narcissi, half hidden yet smelling sweetly. So shall I also see Banksia roses, Riccartonii fuschias and the old walnut tree that the rooks fed from so greedily? Maybe.

There is one scarlet bloom on the Smithii rhododendron, over by the stone wall. There used to be so many. But that was before Nature took over from the gardeners. Before suckers and creepers choked the shrubs and trees that were once tended so lovingly.

I stand by the wide wooden gate that marks the entrance to our grounds and cannot see the House. Undergrowth gone wild conceals it from prying eyes. I am not at all sure that I want to see it. Better to remember it as it was than to confront its crumbling walls. Or is that cowardly of me?

I must find Katharine. Brambles and convolvulus cannot bar me from her. Nothing can, for I am finally back. How long it has been, since I lived here with Jeremy and William and, of course, Katharine! Why, it will soon have been half a century …

In some senses it seems longer in retrospect. When we lost our home, we also lost our moorings. But I am not here to dwell on what was and nor am I bitter, though I am heavy-hearted. I am here, purely and simply, in search of Katharine.

She told me, all those years ago, that I would return. Little did I dream, then, the circumstances I would be returning in. It was fortunate for me that I could not see as she saw. It does not do, to see too far into the future. The seeing might make us fearful when, in fact, there is nothing to fear and much to be thankful for.
I must bear this in mind as I round the last bend of our drive. Rounding it, I stand stock-still and sigh.

Those well-loved walls that housed us have crumbled virtually to dust. Just a shell is left and the sadness in me is overwhelming. There is room, though, for relief that William and Jeremy are not with me. I would not want them to see the desolation I am seeing.

What is this? Words of warning confront me now, written on a big notice:

ORDERS ARE MEANT TO BE OBEYED

DISREGARD OF THEM HAS CAUSED DEATH

I cannot obey orders to keep out of my old home. It might even be that my death is necessary for the finding of Katharine.

Memory directs my feet towards the medieval wing, some of which is still standing. And I hear my voice calling “Katharine … Katharine.”

Then there is silence, broken after a while by the sound of gunfire. Is the world again at war? I could believe that it is. I could believe anything.
A mist swirls in. Purbeck mists are invariably sudden, so I am not surprised by this one. It soon surrounds me, enfolding … obscuring.

“Katharine!” I call again.

My voice echoes through the mist. Or is it echoing?

Now I know that it is not, for I can see Katharine. She is emerging from the oldest wing and is saying my name. Then she beckons.

Professional Reviews

Out Of Time
This is an unforgettable novel that evokes the mystical beauty of the lost Dorset village of Tyneham brilliantly. The intriguing figure of the enigmatic Katherine and the haunting sense of absence that permeates through Glynn's writing captured my imagination from the first page, leading me on a spine-tingling journey through time. This is a compelling and moving novel that once picked up can not be put down. More from this author please ... a must read!
