The next several hours saw 'Bray House' a hive of rushed industry.
Soloman, three fieldsmen and a maid were in the attic. Enough slates had been lifted to give them daylight, that they could stow what had suddenly become treasures, into the loft.
I hastened downstairs on hearing another horse race to the door. It was Henry again.
"Just beyond Rushden,father, I encountered a fellow agent bringing later news. There is now even a greater problem than billeting scores of soldiers."
"What? Is Cromwell bypassing Piston Water?"
Beatrix hurried from bundling parcels of food in the cookhouse, to join us.
For the next several frightening minutes we listened to a revelation more ominous than the last. Prince Rupert's brother Maurice had arrived in Oxford with his cavalry, bolstering Roy numbers.
"The Royal army is already marching up the Cherwell Valley."
"Oh, dear God. So close?"
Wait, father. This means the two armies are about to meet. The spy's report is that Rupert had designated Naseby Common as his bivouac for Sunday night."
My brain did a somersault. This was Saturday. My Beatrix sat on the divan, hands cupped to cheeks.
"Tomorrow night will see Parliament encamped at Pitsford Water and the Royals at Naseby."
"Five miles apart and us the meat in the sandwich?"

Multi-published historical writer, Kev Richardson's slant on 17th Century history comes across as very personally realistic, as factions of the ruling class fight to maintain a hold on religious beliefs. In 'Faith and Frenzy' he introduces Richard Bray, wife Beatrix and their extensive family who live through and survive England's bloody Civil War.
If you like to live the history you are reading, this book is extremely well presented. I highly recommend it.
