From my leaning post on the twin tub I was on the point of becoming concerned and was about to make the appropriate enquiry as to whether everything was OK, when with a series of clatters and bangs, Stan emerged over the top of my head, like a shell from a gun, clearing it by several feet, and not stopping until he was half way down the garden. White as a sheet and with his eyes wide with fear he stood there in silence as disturbed bric-a-brac continued to settle back into place. “Flamin’ ‘eck, what’s up?” I enquired. “You should see the size of that bloody spider!” came the withered reply. “It must be three inches across!” “A spider. You are kidding me! I thought there must be a Jap hiding out in yer jungle. I’ll get them”. “I think there’s only one!” shouted Stan from his safe area. “I’m not getting the spider, I’m getting the drain rods” I replied. I have to say, I claim to be ‘not scared’ of spiders, but this was a beast, a real masterpiece of genetic engineering. And the beast had been busy. There in the corner above the pile of drain rods, was a small frog, trussed up in a silk cocoon and hanging up, slowly rotating back and forth in the breeze dangling by a single silken strand, ready for lunch. I decided the best plan of action was to make a quick grab for the drain rods and make my exit quickly, whilst trying to look as I was not terrified of the eight legged garage monster.
