The day I married Marcy was the most glorious experience of my life. Many people from the town of Mayfield were there at our wedding. We had the ceremony at a little small church in the community. It took place right outside the front doors of the Church.
All of our friends showed up Marcy’s sister and her family was also there, and even Marilyn was there to see us on our memorable day. We had a large dinner after the ceremony right outside next to the Church. It was the happiest of occasions as all the children played and the adults chatted with each other.
People we both never met before came out to greet us and introduce themselves.
Marcy threw the bridal bouquet into the air and to beat all I’d ever seen in my days, Marilyn was the very one who caught it. The ladies laughed and told her that she would be next getting married. As I looked into her eyes, and she caught me staring at her, she smiled and wiped a tear from her eye.
After all was said and done, we gathered the boys in the car and drove home. No, we never took the honeymoon that many usually would try to do. Marcy and I had been on our honeymoon from day one when we first met each other.
As time passed by us, days turned into months and finally years. Many things changed for us in our lives. Marcy did get pregnant and had a third child, a little girl, and she was my own child but even with the other boys, little Jacob and John, there wasn’t any difference between the three of them as far as I was concerned. I loved all three of those kids.
The Mission that Marcy and the other ladies responsible for creating, was successful and many others sprung up across the Country as the word spread about how much they helped the poor and unfortunate ones that suffered.
President Franklin Roosevelt was elected to lead the United States out of the Great Depression as it was named. We lost a few friends along the way. Ole Joe who ran the Town grocery died on us right after the new President was sworn into office. The doctor said his heart must have given out on him in his sleep one night. It was hard on us losing Joe and even the rest of the community felt a big loss with him gone.
I told Marcy at his funeral that if you ever had to pass on out of the world, then that would be the best way to go. Joe’s wife followed him to glory within six months of his death. They had a will, but nobody to leave the store to in the family, as they had been childless. Ruth had it written in the will to leave the store to Marcy. I took over management of the store and hired others to run it as the store had always operated.
Marcy continued working at the Mission as she had time but also worked at the store sometimes too when she could get a baby-sitter to watch Julie, our little girl. The boys continued growing up over the years and becoming teenagers. They began to notice the girls and John was the first one to date.
Marilyn finally settled down with a man who was an auto salesman, and they had a set of twins. They did fairly well and moved into a larger home to raise the twins. I was glad to see her change from the old ways she had earlier in her life.
