When Grigoryev arrived at the crumbling eighth-floor walkup on Zemaitijos Street, Asta was on the roof tugging laundry off the line. Out on the balcony he could see clothes snapping in the wind, their shadows undulating like those of migrating geese drifting over autumn hillsides, Asta’s shivering silhouette at their lead, torso and arms extended outward, strongest of her flock. Grigoryev loved thinking of his wife this way, imagining someday she would swoop down with great beating wings, snatch him off her laundry line, and press him tenderly to her face like a fresh shirt.
